Cleveland Welcomes Southern Tier Brewery

Cleveland can expect a new addition to their city as Southern Tier Brewing Company ( plans to open up a new brewery and tasting room. The new brewery will be replacing the old location of 811 Kitchen Bar Lounge.

Southern Tier Brewing Company, soon to be located on 811 Prospect Ave., will host a variety of beers from the Southern Tier portfolio, as well as some Cleveland specialty brewed beers called “Cleveland Brew’d”. The announcement was made Thursday, the 18th, by the New York based brewery.

Southern Tier was founded by Allen Yahn and Phineas DeMink in 2002. From brewing in the woods just out of Lakewood, their business fan base rapidly grew to most of New York and Pennsylvania in 2005. It was in 2009 when they were able to add a 20,000 sq. foot building which allowed them to sell nationally and internationally. They recently partnered with Victory Brewing Company in 2016.

A statement was put out by the COO, Phin DeMink, “Since we opened our doors, we’ve really appreciated the number of people from Cleveland who have visited us in Lakewood, so I couldn’t be happier to open a brewery there. The neighborhood is fun, has a lot going on, and it’s close to the Indians and Cavs. I can’t wait to get in there and start brewing really cool beer.”

Cleveland will be the second location of Southern Tier’s satellite brewing building. Pittsburgh, PA is the site of their very first satellite brewery which was opened just this January. The first satellite brewery will also introduce a beer garden in the fall.

However, Southern Tier isn’t the first to bring its beers to Cleveland. A few breweries like Noble Beast, Thirsty Dog, and Masthead have built breweries in Cleveland in just this past year. Yet, this is no surprise. Superior Beverage Senior Vice President Jason Edwards noted, “Cleveland is already one of the top craft beer markets in the country.”

Due to Cleveland’s recent success, “Cleveland has earned a reputation as a world-class craft beer city,” stated Justin Hemminger, a spokesman for Ohio Craft Brewers Association. Superior Beverage Senior Vice President Jason Edwards stated, “We couldn’t be more excited to have a top-notch partner such as Southern Tier willing to make such a significant investment in our own backyard. Southern Tier’s emphasis on quality and innovation are certain to have a positive effect on the world class craft beer foundation that Cleveland has been building for decades.”
